When a friend of mine turned 30 she was depressed for a week. I couldn’t understand why she felt this way, until she admitted that she felt like a failure in life. She and her husband were not getting along and she knew they would eventually get a divorce. She felt as if she had spent the last few years running at full speed, yet not moving forward only digging herself into a life that made her very unhappy.
She made me realize how different a person views a birthday when you are happy with your life. When you live your life with no regrets and you’re happy with your choices. Getting older is easier to accept.
Aging, for me so far has been one of the best things about life. When I think about the person I was in my twenties and I think about the person I am today. There is nothing that would make me want to be that young again.
Aging gives you permission to stand up for yourself. Maybe it’s not so much permission, as it is that by experiencing life you learn how to live better. I have become selfish with my time and only spend it with people I really want to be with. I’m learning to say no and not feel guilty about taking care of myself.
I’m at the stage in my life where I know –really know, what I want out of life. I’ve learned that if a person has no sense of purpose and meaning they are just going through the motions of living without really feeling alive.
In order to be happy in life you have to believe in what you’re doing, in the kind of life you’re leading. Living life and truly opening up to all that life has to offer is scary. Starting a new job, a new relationship, having a family, everything is a risk. Accomplishing these things isn’t easy but unless you fight for your happiness and follow your heart, you will never truly experience life.
Don’t wait for happiness to find you. Happiness isn’t a condition that descends upon you, it doesn’t just bang you on the head and announce its arrival. Happiness doesn’t come from a source that we can just inject into our lives. Happiness comes from within us and we have to create it. We have to be honest with ourselves and with our hopes and dreams.
Life is too precious to waste and to wonderful not to experience fully. If you’re unhappy don’t wait for life to get better, make it better. Take control. Seize life! Find a purpose and live-really live your life.
